January 20, 2015  Pima/Beverly Canyon Trail Maintenance & Repair
7 VOAZ volunteers spent the morning at Beverly Canyon (South Mountain Park) working on basic trail maintenance. The group repaired and rebuilt drains, trimmed back plants in the corridor, reinforced a retaining wall and made general improvements on the trail. We were visited by Moose the horse (owned by one of the volunteers and led out by her husband). Dave received his coveted 10-PIN as recognition for his tenth VOAZ volunteer event.

December 17, 2014  Pima/Beverly Canyon Trail Maintenance & Repair
Three VOAZ volunteers spent the morning performing trail maintenance on the loop near the golf course. The rain-dampened made the work go faster & easier. There were plenty of quail & rabbits in the area enjoying the weather.

November 18, 2014  Pima/Beverly Canyon Trail Maintenance & Repair
11/18/14 South Mountain Pima/Beverly Canyon Trail Repair

VOAZ volunteers spent their morning helping restore the Pima Wash Trail in South Mountain Park. The trail saw heavy damage due to flooding. The group build and/or opened 30+ drains, debermed hundreds of feet of tread, built a zuni bowl structure to protect the edge of the tread, unearthed two sign posts buried in the sand, found one post 30' downstream from the original site. The sign posts were reinstalled in their proper places helping hikers find their way along the trail.

February 23, 2013  Pima Canyon/Pima Wash
VOAZ volunteers took advantage in a break in the winter weather and spent time working on the eastern leg of the Pima Wash/Beverly Canyon perimeter trail. With three first-timers, the group was able to wrap up all of the tasks requested by the Phoenix Parks folks. January 19, 2013  Trail Use Interviews
With a small crew throughout the day, we received a total of 55 interviews and gave away nearly all our goodies. We received 13 surveys from Pima East and the rest from the trailhead areas. It wa such a beautiful day, that even a baby rattlesnake came out to play.

January 12, 2013  Pima Canyon/Pima Wash
Nine VOAZ volunteers braved the cold weather and worked diligently on the north side of the Pima Wash/Beverly Canyon perimeter loop. Sections of highly eroded tread were replaced with more sustainable, contouring tread, existing drains were cleared, new drains added where needed and multiple other tasks were completed to enhance the trail for all levels and types of users. The group included three First-Timers (Rob, George & Tom).; we certainly hope to see them at future events.

January 5, 2013  Trail Use Observation Orientation
Volunteers donated their time to observe trail traffic in the Pima Canyon area of South Mountain Park. Volunteers were shown the designated viewing points and instructed on how to fill out the tracking worksheets. Observation work will be completed at volunteer's leisure through the month of January. A calendar will be kept off-line to document and coordinate days and hours observed. A new volunteer has already completed 5 hours of observation work since orientation. This study will help us understand the most and least used trail segments in order to plan for improvements in the area this fall.

December 13, 2012  Pima Canyon/Pima Wash
Seven volunteers donated their time to continue work on the trails in South Mountain Park. Tasked completed included building hardened drains to protect the tread, reclaimation of a social trail that appeared within the last 60 days, realignment a highly eroded section of trail including the reloaction of two boulders). Jim G was awarded his 10-Pin for his participation.

December 8, 2012  Pima Canyon/Beverly Canyon perimeter trail(s)
Thanks to the sixteen volunteers that completed the trail reroute on the northern perimeter of the Beverly Canyon area. We welcomed four first-timers and the return of an "early days" volunteer. In addition, we recognized Joe Z for his 90th VOAZ volunteer event.. This event is part of a large project at South Mountain Park in effort to restore & maintain sustainable trails in the Pima Canyon/Beverly Canyon section of the park.

Michael Baker and Kristi worked with a group of 8 youth volunteers to complete the 300 feet of trail closure. Mike Snodgrass worked with the 15 adult volunteers to construct 100 feet of new trail and add drainages to the existing trail. John (Kristi's husband) worked with the volunteers and built the water collection structure..

Volunteers constructed 290 feet of new trail along Pima Canyon trail, skirting an eroded and steep stretch of the original trail. 200 feet of old trail was closed. The new trail was artfully connected to the main trail.

Three VOAZ volunteers joined together to finish the trail maintenance tasks in Beverly Canyon. Tasks included tread widening on a rerouted section of trail, 8 drainage structures constructed to prevent headcutting and clearing existing drains.

December 3, 2011  Beverly Canyon Trail reroute
Voaz - 12-03


Eleven volunteers constructed 410 feet reroute along the Beverly Canyon trail, skirting an eroded and steep stretch of the original trail. Included in the work were connections to the main trail, reclamation of unauthorized trails, and a strategically placed rock blocking hikers but allowing drainage between trails at a fork. Cyclists tested the new stretch of trail while we were on site and gave approval.

November 22, 2011  Trail Maintenance & Rehab
VOAZ volunteers and staff began the tasks involved in upgrading the trail system in the Pima Canyon section of South Mountain Park. The crew perfromed tasks that included pruning & trimming plants along the corridor, construction full bench tread, reclaiming old trails and tracks, and installing drainage structures.
