Tonto National Forest

General Information
Description: The Tonto National Forest is nearly 3 million acres of public land in central Arizona. Situated to the north and east of the Phoenix metro area, it extends from the Sonoran desert in the Cave Creek, Globe, Mesa, and Tonto Basin Ranger Districts to ponderosa pine and Douglas fir on the Pleasant Valley Ranger District and in the Mogollon Rim country of the Payson Ranger District. Six reservoirs and miles of river on the Salt and Verde Rivers, a wide array of campgrounds, trails, and roads of various driving difficulty levels are available for the recreating public. Commodity uses such as fuelwood cutting and grazing are permitted. In contrast, remote Wilderness areas on the Tonto provide undeveloped opportunities for solitude and non-motorized forms of recreation. The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.
