Jug Trail Extension at Salome Creek - Maintenance - Roosevelt Lake

VOAZ volunteers will perform necessary trail maintenance to the Jug Extension Trail at Salome Creek. This is the exit trail for canyoneers that trek through this popular slot canyon.

Join us on the trail at this 2010 National Trails Day event partly sponsored by American Hiking Society.
After a 2 year hiatus, VOAZ volunteers will return to the Salome Wilderness to perform maintenance on the Jug Trail Extension. This unique canyoneering trail was designed and built to enable canyoneers a safe, relatively quick, and reasonably sustainable exit from the highly popular slot canyon.
Due to the steep, exposed (no shade) work area and the long (2+ miles) Grand Canyon-style hike (downhill going in), this event is one of the most strenuous on the schedule. Work will include rock harvesting and hauling, constructing steps, check dams & weirs, and other drainage structures. We will base at the PINTAIL LOOP of the GRAPEVINE Group campground on the banks of Roosevelt Lake-running water, toilets and, if all goes well, hot showers!
We will work on the trail all day Saturday and have the opportunity to be led through the slot canyon on Sunday. Due to wilderness regulations and the extremes of the work area, this event is limited. The drive to the campground is about 2.5 hours from the VOAZ office (paved roads) and the trailhead is about 50 minutes from the campground (on gravel roads with 1 minor stream crossing).
